News from the Den- June 6

Our ABC Countdown continues to be a real hit at HHE. Students were nice and cozy on Kick Back and Relax Day and on Jersey Day took cheering for the Oilers very seriously. We had eruptions of "Let's go Oilers" fill the air as students went to and from recess! Lemonade Day was such a treat. A huge thank you to FAHHE for organizing the refreshing treat during lunch. Our students were thrilled!
We ended our week with such an amazing day. Our Sports Day was truly incredible! Despite a bit of rain that paused the afternoon for a bit, students had such a blast trying all the fun events. Our Grade 6 students were such great leaders. They helped at each station and with each group and we heard nothing but accolades from our parents on how impressed they were with their leadership. We are so proud of them! Thank you to our Grade 6 students and the teachers for organizing this leadership opportunity. A huge shout out to our team of teachers who worked hard to plan and organize this day. Thank you to Mrs. Bentley, Mme Julien, Mr. Mazur, Mrs. O'Neill, and Mrs. Taverner!
The month is just flying by! Thirteen more days of school full of learning and fun.

ACTION
Fitset Ninja (June 18 & 19)
We are so fortunate that FAHHE has organized Fitset Ninja to come to our school on June 18 & 19. Each class at our school will have the opportunity to participate in the Mobile Obstacle Course where Ninja Coaches will guide students to balance, jump and swing their way through the course. In order for your child(ren) to participate, there are two forms that we will need- a paper form for Fitset Ninja and the Permission Click sent earlier this week.
On June 18 Kindergarten and Grade 1-3 will participate. On June 19 Kindergarten and Grade 4-6 will participate. We are so excited for this exciting event. Thank you FAHHE!
REMINDER: 2024-25 school fees
School fees for the 2024-25 school year are posted on the PowerSchool Parent Portal. All fees are due within 30 days of being posted. Throughout the year, fees are often added to cover the costs for various activities, such as field trips, extracurricular activities, and late, damaged or lost textbooks.
To access your fee information, simply log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal and go to “Student Fees.” There you can view fees and pay them online using a Mastercard or Visa credit or debit card. Make sure to monitor your child’s account on an ongoing basis.
For more information about school fees, waivers and payment deadlines, visit eips.ca/schools/fees. And, if you have questions, think there’s an error or need help creating a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, contact your child’s school directly before the summer break.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Pursuant to Board Policy 23: School Fees and Administrative Procedure 505: School and Administrative Fees, EIPS will forward any unpaid 2024-25 fee amounts to a collection agency. To prevent this from happening, remember to pay your fees before Aug. 31, 2025.

Pick up a summer reading kit for your child in Grade 1!
The Strathcona County Library prepares reading kits for Grade 1 students to encourage children to practice reading throughout the summer so they can build on their newly acquired reading skills. The kit is free and contains fun activities to keep students reading all summer long. Kits are available from June 1 to Aug. 24, 2025. Families can pick up kits from the main floor Information Desk at the Library or meet the Bookmobile at any of its weekly stops. Library staff ask families to bring their children to pick up their kits in person so staff members can meet them and welcome them to the library. Learn more
INFORMATION
Class Lists & Configurations
This year, we’re taking a new approach to sharing class lists in an effort to ease some of the uncertainty that can come with the transition into a new school year. We recognize that both students and families appreciate having time to process this change, so rather than waiting until August, we will be sending out class placement information before the summer break. Between June 16–18, you will receive an email for each of your children, letting you know who their teacher will be for the upcoming school year. We hope that sharing this information early will help everyone start the summer feeling more informed and at ease.

Upcoming Emergency Drills
In our ongoing efforts to keep families informed, you will receive regular communication from the school regarding all emergency preparedness drills the school conducts.
Schools are required to have evacuation drills in the spring (fire drills) & a shelter in place (severe weather) drill. The dates are as follows:
- Monday, June 9
As this is a drill, there is no action parents/guardians need to take. In the event of an evacuation in response to an actual incident, we would provide information on any actions parents/guardians need to take to co-operatively support our emergency response procedures.
An evacuation is used when it is unsafe to remain inside the building. In an evacuation, students and staff exit the building and gather at a designated location outside the school. In the event students and staff must remain outside for an extended period of time, they may move to our alternate indoor evacuation centre. For more information about Elk Island Public Schools’ emergency preparedness planning, visit www.eips.ca/parents/emergency-preparedness.
Thank you for your co-operation in keeping students and staff safe. If you have any questions about our evacuation drills, please contact us at the school.
